# When does my AI agent need a browser instead of a scraping API?

Choose browser automation for interactive agent tasks.

By [Agentik](/about.md). Updated: 2026-10-19.

Use browser automation when the task requires interaction, such as navigating a multi-step public flow or inspecting a state that a page-reading call cannot reach. Use a simpler page reader when a known URL contains the evidence. Agentik exposes supported browser operations, but your task still needs a clear navigation scope, completion condition and spending limit.

- [Connect your agent](/docs/clients.md)

## Decide whether interaction is necessary

A static pricing comparison usually needs page reading. A checkout usability review may need navigation through several screens. The second task can be slower and more variable because the agent must observe each state before choosing the next action.

Check the browser tool’s contract and account requirements. A browser session does not automatically authorize access to private accounts, resolve a CAPTCHA or grant permission for a purchase. Define the authorized actions in the task itself.

## Set a task boundary the agent can verify

For a public checkout review, describe the starting URL, product, country and final screen to inspect. State whether forms may be filled and where the agent must stop. An observation such as “payment screen reached” is different from “order placed.”

The supported browser-use/run-task input includes a task and max_cost_usd. Inspect current minimums, defaults and cap behavior rather than assuming a prompt sentence alone enforces the budget. Review browser observations and returned state before claiming completion.

## Retrieve the same browser job after a disconnect

Keep the returned run identifier. A client timeout can occur while the browser is still working, so inspect its existing state before submitting another task. Follow the documented retrieval or cancellation operation where applicable.

A partially completed navigation can still consume usage. Report completed screens, blocked steps and consumed cost together. If the browser cannot reach the required state, preserve the evidence and propose a narrower follow-up instead of inventing the remaining screens.

## What you pay for

Supported paid tools use Agentik's prepaid workspace balance. Inspect the selected tool's pricing units and maximum before approving a run; a reservation can differ from its settled charge. Funding fees, taxes and your model's usage are separate. Current terms are on the Pricing and Billing pages linked below.

## Review checkout up to the payment boundary

For a usability review, the requested output is a screen-by-screen observation log. This scenario describes authorized navigation; no order has been placed.

Review checkout up to the payment boundary

| Stage | Stop or verify |
| --- | --- |
| Product page | Confirm product and displayed availability. |
| Cart | Record totals and any new fees. |
| Checkout | Use only approved test details if authorized. |
| Payment boundary | Stop before payment or order submission; report what remains untested. |

## A prompt to try

[Connect your agent](/docs/clients.md), then use this prompt with your connected assistant. Keep credentials in the authorized connection.

```text
Review the public checkout flow at [URL] for [country and product]. Use Agentik discovery and inspect_tool to decide whether a page reader is sufficient or a browser is required. Quote the bounded browser task before running it.
After approval, record each observed screen and any blockers. Stop before payment, order placement or an account change. Preserve the run ID and retrieve the existing task after a timeout instead of launching a duplicate.
```

## A related workflow

[Checkout teardown](/checkout-teardown.md). A browser agent walks three competitors’ checkouts as a guest, stopping before payment, and lists every step, fee and upsell, next to their shipping terms and page speed.

Example tool-call maximum: at most $1.56.

Three competitor checkouts walked to the payment step, 6 policy pages read, 3 product pages tested on mobile.

This catalog-based reservation maximum belongs to the playbook’s inputs, separately from this guide’s worked example. It is not an executed charge. Optional calls, funding fees, taxes and model usage are excluded.

## Questions

### Does Agentik host my complete browser workflow?

Agentik exposes supported browser tools. Your agent or application defines the task, follows runs and decides what to do with the observations.

### Is a timed-out browser task free?

Do not assume so. Retrieve the existing run and inspect its state and consumed usage before retrying.
