# How can I compare API providers for the same agent task?

Use matching inputs and inspect the output you actually need.

By [Agentik](/about.md). Updated: 2026-10-19.

To compare tool providers, define an equivalent task and examine each operation's contract before testing it. Agentik can supply supported candidates through one account, but they can differ in parameters, coverage, output and billing units. Use the evaluation plan below to record observed results. This page does not claim to publish a measured provider benchmark.

## Make the task equivalent before comparing price

For search, use the same question, locale, period and result limit. For page reading, use the same permitted URL and define whether plain HTML, rendered content or a structured extraction is required. For images, match output dimensions, input assets and the number of results.

A similar tool name does not establish equivalence. One API may return snippets while another fetches full text. An email discovery operation and an email verification operation answer different questions.

## Record the contract and the observed outcome

Use this as a worksheet for a test you authorize. Leave untested results blank and keep incomplete or missing responses distinct from successful outputs.

Provider evaluation fields, not measured results

| Field | What to record |
| --- | --- |
| Tool and version | Exact selected ID, contract date and provider documentation. |
| Input | Query or URL, locale, limits and other material parameters. |
| Acceptance | Required fields, provenance, freshness and usable format. |
| Execution | Run ID, final state, observed latency and any incomplete result. |
| Cost | Pricing unit, reservation and settled charge for equivalent output. |
| Coverage | Which requested items were returned, missing or unsupported. |

## Switch deliberately after inspecting the alternative

Discovery can help identify another supported provider. Keeping the same Agentik account avoids another billing signup, but switching operations can still require schema changes, output mapping and a revised quote.

Do not present one successful call as a reliability rate. Repeat a representative set only when that testing is useful and authorized, record errors and coverage, and state the test conditions. Use those observations rather than a universal quality score.

## What you pay for

Supported paid tools use Agentik's prepaid workspace balance. Inspect the selected tool's pricing units and maximum before approving a run; a reservation can differ from its settled charge. Funding fees, taxes and your model's usage are separate. Current terms are on the Pricing and Billing pages linked below.

## Compare two search tools with an explicit test contract

For an illustrative comparison, use the query “model context protocol” and request three results from serper/search and exa/search. Serper uses q and num; Exa uses query, type and numResults. Inspect both contracts rather than sending an identical JSON object.

The inputs below are documented specimens, not an executed result. Search type, ranking and locale semantics can differ. A three-result request does not establish the charged units or the reservation maximum. Read each current tool page before a paid trial; no quality or latency result is claimed here.

Compare two search tools with an explicit test contract

| Tool | Input specimen | What to compare after approval |
| --- | --- | --- |
| serper/search | q: model context protocol; num: 3 | Relevant URLs, source type, overlap and settled usage. |
| exa/search | query: model context protocol; type: fast; numResults: 3 | Relevant URLs, source type, overlap and settled usage. |

## A prompt to try

[Connect Codex](/connect/codex.md), then use this prompt with your connected assistant. Keep credentials in the authorized connection.

```text
Prepare a fair comparison of serper/search and exa/search for [research question]. Use inspect_tool to read each schema and pricing. Keep the query and requested result count comparable, documenting differences in mode, locale and returned content.
Define relevance, source diversity, missing fields and settled-cost checks. Show the input for each provider and its reservation maximum separately. Do not invent quality or latency measurements; wait for approval before running the comparison.
```

## A related workflow

[Keyword research](/keyword-research.md). Seed terms in, a ranked keyword list out, with what page one covers and how people ask in forums.

Example tool-call maximum: at most $0.54.

3 seed keywords for the United States in English, 100 ideas scored, page one read for the top 5 keywords, 5 forum searches.

This catalog-based reservation maximum belongs to the playbook’s inputs, separately from this guide’s worked example. It is not an executed charge. Optional calls, funding fees, taxes and model usage are excluded.

## Questions

### Can I try different providers without separate billing accounts?

For supported Agentik tools, yes. You can inspect candidates and execute authorized tests from the same workspace balance. Each tool retains its own contract and pricing.

### How do I compare two scraping providers?

Use the same URL and required extraction, inspect both schemas and compare usable fields, provenance, final state, latency and settled charge. Do not equate a snippet with a full rendered page.

### Does discovery automatically choose and fail over?

Discovery returns candidates for your agent to evaluate. Do not assume your workflow has automatic cross-provider failover or that a different operation can accept the same input.

### Where can I see tool prices before making a call?

Inspect the selected tool through the catalog, inspect_tool or the REST inspection endpoint. Confirm the price unit, maximum reservation and any actual-cost conditions.
