Should I use a tool gateway or integrate each provider directly?
Compare a shared agent tool gateway with direct API integrations.
By Agentik · Updated
A shared gateway can reduce the number of provider integrations and funding accounts needed for supported operations. Direct APIs can offer vendor-specific features, commercial terms or control outside the gateway’s catalog. Choose based on the complete workflow and the integration work your team is prepared to own.

List what each integration asks your team to own
With Agentik, the supported tool interface centralizes discovery, access and billing while retaining explicit provider contracts. Your application still owns task orchestration, input validation, output review and its model integration.
With direct APIs, your team also manages each provider’s credentials, commercial setup, endpoint integration and usage review. That work can be worthwhile when a provider’s unique features or a predictable high-volume agreement are important to the product.
Check endpoint coverage instead of provider names
A provider listed in a gateway does not imply access to its entire product. Write down required endpoints, input options, geographic coverage and data fields. Identify which are served now and which require a direct integration.
Inspect private-account authorization separately from paid public data or generation. A gateway cannot replace the source owner’s consent, and a direct key does not automatically grant access to every organization account.
Keep an understandable path between the two
Retain provider identity, normalized task inputs and source references in your application’s records. Document which differences would matter when replacing a gateway tool with a direct operation. Avoid treating every provider result as a universal schema.
A mixed design can be appropriate: shared access for occasional capabilities and direct contracts for a stable specialist workload. Evaluate actual usage and maintenance responsibilities before committing; do not assume that either design is always cheaper.
What you pay for
Supported paid tools use Agentik's prepaid workspace balance. Inspect the selected tool's pricing units and maximum before approving a run; a reservation can differ from its settled charge. Funding fees, taxes and your model's usage are separate. Current terms are on the Pricing and Billing pages linked below.
Decide for a two-tool research product
Use a small ownership matrix for the exact operations the application needs. This is an architecture decision template, not a cost benchmark.
On a small screen, scroll to see every column.
| Requirement | Gateway evaluation | Direct API evaluation |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional page reading | Supported endpoint, price and output contract. | Provider setup and maintenance required. |
| Specialist search option | Confirm exact option exists in the catalog. | Confirm upstream access and contractual requirements. |
| Operations | Shared run and billing interface; app orchestration remains. | Separate provider execution and usage paths. |
| Exit path | Record tool identity and contract differences. | Keep normalized task interface in your application. |

Give this to your agent
Evaluate Agentik versus direct provider APIs for [workflow and expected volume]. List the exact endpoints, fields and account permissions required. Check current gateway coverage rather than assuming every provider feature is available. Compare setup, credentials, billing, run recovery, maintenance and any direct commercial terms I provide. Identify a mixed design if appropriate and document migration differences. Return an evidence-based decision with unknowns before any purchases.
Your agent should inspect the tools and ask for missing inputs before proposing any paid work.

This catalog-based reservation maximum belongs to the playbook’s inputs, separately from this guide’s worked example. It is not an executed charge. Optional calls, funding fees, taxes and model usage are excluded.

Questions
Is a gateway always cheaper than direct APIs?
No. Compare complete usage, funding terms, maintenance and any direct agreement. Do not assume discounts or equivalent endpoint coverage.
Can I combine gateway and direct integrations?
Yes, if your application handles each contract and authorization explicitly. Keep provider identity and task ownership clear.
